You should seek professional help if you are experiencing one or more of the following in your intimate relationship:
- Lack of trust
- Infidelity
- Lack of intimacy
- Misunderstanding and lack of communication
- Anger
- Emotional, physical, sexual or verbal abuse
- Feeling misunderstood and unheard
- Feeling abandoned, alone or unsupported
Intimite relationship problems do not occur overnight. It takes time in order for significant problems in your relationship to develop to the point where you need to consider marriage or couples therapy. When you or your partner do not talk about hurt feelings, the hurt soon turns into resentment. This resentment may turn into anger and hurtful behavior towards the other. The next stage is "emotional deadening." In this stage you feel like roommates instead of intimate partners. Couples counseling can help.
Questions to think about:
- Why do I keep my feelings inside?
- Is there anyone I need to forgive?
- Will my denial keep me from facing my feelings of sadness and depression?
- What is stopping me from getting the help that I need?
